Women and Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health condition in the United States. Women suffer from anxiety at twice the rate of men. It is believed that both nature and nurture --- our genetics and our lived experiences --- contribute to our higher rates of anxiety. A tendency toward anxiety may run in families. And, experiences of sexual assault and other traumas can contribute to ongoing issues with anxiety.

Therapy for Anxiety

Therapy --- and, for many people, medication --- can safely and effectively treat anxiety. Talking about your experience with an experienced professional can help develop new ways of thinking and coping with it. It can be a relief to share your worst symptoms with someone who understands. With clients' permission, therapists and doctors can consult or work together to help clients find relief from their worst symptoms.

How I Help

Working with anxiety, and the shame that often goes with it, requires a calm, gentle approach. I offer this naturally, understanding what it feels like and what helps. Ultimately, you will decide if you want to speak with your doctor about medication. I am happy to share referrals and consult with providers, in these cases.
